SMUV

interior design

São Paulo, Brasil, 2019

Architectural and Interior Design project

In the process of defining an architectural concept matching their mission statement, SMUV partners Lourenco Bustani, Germano Lincoln and Zak Tyler, visited our Casa Alto Paraiso and felt inspired. They invited me to do the design for their two story flag ship store in Sao Paulo. I immediately was very enthusiastic to work with the SMUV team, as it is a pleasure to work with people that have matching visions on the needs of humanity and the planet.

SMUV is a company based in São Paulo, Brazil, with the mission to make people reconnect. Reconnect with themselves, with the other, with their bodies, the planet and in the end, with the source. To stimulate reconnection SMUV serves ‘liquid alchemy’ as they call their superfood smoothies in 100% biodegradable cups. SMUV also offers yoga, meditation classes and various massage and other holistic therapies.

The design process was an example of how a design and construction project can be done by means of virtual communication and still have a warm and personal touch. I visited the location on Rua Bela Cintra, Jardins, São Paulo only twice during the design and construction process. The first time I visited to see and feel the building in its original state. I could determine what elements could be taken out to transform the dark and cluttered space into a space that would feel open, light and welcoming. The second time I visited to view the results of our work and discuss the final touches. In between I worked closely together with SMUV partner Zak Tyler. After making the project drawings we mainly communicated by whatsapp text, conversation, images and film. We would choose materials and think of solutions together, one of us in Europe, the other in São Paulo. This way of woking is only possible with a highly involved client, who actually turns into a design partner.

Furniture for the project was selected or created with a sustainable approach. Some of the furniture was made from a tree that the local authorities cut down. SMUV partner Zak asked if he could have the tree to create furniture for his new business. Other furniture was bought in vintage shops.

As we could not find suitable doors to the Yoga Sala, I designed the doors and they were made on location. The structure is made of steel, the surfaces of bamboo sticks. The final touch to the doors, two crystal doorhandles still nee dot be placed.
